● Platform comparison · 2026
Sutra and Kajabi, honestly compared.
Kajabi is a genuinely impressive platform — a polished commerce system that's helped more than 100,000 creators turn what they know into a business, with funnel templates, checkout, email and branded app options. For a lot of creators, that's exactly the right home. Sutra is built around something quieter: learning that grows through participation, reflection, and shared insight, where the community isn't a feature beside the course but the container the whole experience lives in. This page lays the two out plainly — where Kajabi's breadth genuinely leads, where Sutra goes deeper, and what each really costs — so you can see which one fits the work in front of you.
Feature deep-dive
Every category, side by side.
Switch categories below. Flip "Sutra advantages only" to see where Sutra goes deeper — and you'll notice plenty of honest ties, plus the places Kajabi's breadth genuinely leads. Statuses reflect Kajabi's current plans following the September 2025 "Kajabi Evolved" release, and Sutra's current capabilities.
Architecture & data
Both platforms center on a "space," but they organize it differently. Sutra exposes a real data layer — custom properties on spaces and people. Kajabi organizes everything around the Offer, a sellable bundle that makes it a superb commerce engine, with community and course living as separate product types.
Website & SEO
A close match — and worth correcting a common assumption: both ship real website builders, not just a single landing page. Kajabi adds a mature native blog; Sutra brings a deep template library, custom fonts and script injection. Most of this row is genuine parity.
Learning & courses
Kajabi delivers courses well — drip, module locking, mature auto-graded quizzes, and cohort schedules with Live Rooms. Sutra treats the lesson as an interactive surface where members do and reflect, with 50+ block types and reflection threaded into the flow.
AI
Both ship plenty of AI; the difference is direction. Kajabi's AI points at the business — Cofounder advises on offers and pricing, Creator Studio repurposes video. Sutra's AI points at the learning — it understands the discussion, builds from your corpus, and remembers you.
Email & communication
Sutra ships native broadcast email, sequences and conditional automations, so the fundamentals are at parity. Kajabi's sharper edge is the packaged funnel-template wizard and universal social inbox.
Monetization & commerce
Comparable on the essentials. Kajabi is deeper on commerce breadth — 140+ currencies, BNPL, automated sales tax, invoicing. Sutra's edge: guest checkout, cash affiliate payouts, and no per-sale platform fee floor.
Community & mobile
Kajabi's relative strength. Both have native apps, feeds, chat and events — but fully-branded mobile apps, gamification and Live Rooms are genuine Kajabi advantages. Sutra's counter is that the community is the learning container, not a separate tab.
API, integrations & i18n
A real Sutra strength. Sutra's API is mature and available without a top-tier upgrade — OpenAPI spec, HMAC-signed webhooks, SSO and a 7-language UI. Kajabi has a larger integration ecosystem, but gates its API to Pro and webhooks to Growth+.
Analytics & reporting
Both report on members, courses and events. Kajabi is stronger on revenue and funnel reporting; Sutra surfaces per-lesson video-watch tracking, XLSX export, and AI synthesis of what a cohort is actually learning.
The true cost
Credit where it's due — and one cost worth knowing about.
Run sales through Kajabi Payments and Kajabi takes no cut of your revenue beyond standard processing — a genuinely creator-friendly stance. The one caveat: bring your own Stripe and Kajabi adds a 0.5%–5% surcharge to each sale, set by your plan. Here's what that surcharge alone adds up to as you grow.*
Static worked example
Your annual member/course revenue: $250,000
Kajabi plan (sets the 3rd-party processor surcharge): Growth · 1%
$2,500 in Kajabi 3rd-party processor surcharges per year
$0 Sutra platform transaction fees*
On the Growth plan, if you run sales through your own Stripe, Kajabi's 1% surcharge on $250,000 of sales ≈ $2,500/yr — on top of ~$2,388/yr in plan cost. Switch to Kajabi Payments and that surcharge disappears, though subscriptions still carry +0.7% and international cards +1.5%. With Sutra, the per-sale platform fee is $0.
Sourcing note. Kajabi capabilities reflect its current plans following the September 2025 "Kajabi Evolved" release (Starter/Kickstarter, Basic, Growth, Pro), verified against kajabi.com/pricing, help.kajabi.com, and the September 2025 BusinessWire launch release. Sutra capabilities reflect Sutra's current product and internal capability map. *Kajabi's third-party-processor surcharge (5% / 2% / 1% / 0.5% on Starter / Basic / Growth / Pro) applies to sales run through a non-Kajabi-Payments processor, excluding PayPal; using Kajabi Payments avoids it, but Kajabi Payments still adds +0.7% on subscriptions/payment plans and +1.5% on international cards. Calculator plan-cost figures use annual-billing effective pricing (Starter ≈ $71/mo, Basic ≈ $143/mo, Growth ≈ $199/mo, Pro ≈ $399/mo) and illustrate the third-party surcharge only — excluding Stripe/PayPal processing and Apple/Google in-app fees, which apply on top.
